History of Capoeira

Origins in Resistance
Capoeira was born in colonial Brazil, created by enslaved Africans as a form of cultural and physical resistance. Disguised as dance and play, it was a martial art of freedom.
Persecution and Survival
After abolition, capoeira was criminalized. Capoeiristas were persecuted, but the art survived on the streets, in yards, and in clandestine rodas, keeping the flame of freedom alive.
Legitimization and Recognition
Mestre Bimba created Capoeira Regional, systematizing the moves and opening the first academy. Mestre Pastinha defended Capoeira Angola, preserving the original traditions.
Global Recognition
UNESCO declared capoeira as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing it as an expression of resistance, freedom, and Brazilian cultural identity.
